York is a low lying city in the flood plains of the River Ouse. As such there aren’t many viewpoints to view the city scape.
Clifford Tower was built as a defensive tower in 1068 by the Normans. The North of England, and York in particular offered fierce resistance against the new conquerors of England. There was an original wooden tower burnt down, earlier which was then replaced with the much stronger stone tower.
Even this tower succumbed to attack, and only the walls remain, but the climb up to the tower, and then on to the walls is well worth it, even allowing for the extremely narrow stairs up to the walls.
The tower is now maintained by English Heritage.
