As part of the millennium celebrations a series of direction signs, information plaques and benches were installed near and alongside the River Ouse.
The various objects all have a common theme in their signage. In an oval the legend York Millennium Walks runs vertically up the left hand of the oval. On the right hand side a capital M is underlined with a yellow line, and breaks 5 vertical wavy lines representing the river.
The style of the letter ‘M’ is in the style of the Millenium Commission. This commission allocated money from the National Lottery to fund many community projects to celebrate the millennium.. It carried on its work past the millennium until 2006 when it was disbanded after having spent over 2 billion pounds.
The work to install the various sign was carried out b York City Council.
This area of the River Ouse also forms the ‘New Walk’ a promenade path laid out in the 1730s . Large parts of the route were tree lined and these benches form a nice place to stop and enjoy the view.
The benches are metal with a large concrete support on the left hand side with a small embedded millennium plaque embedded in the concrete.
