The Complex Military Alverca has a great importance for the history of Portuguese aeronautics, since almost the beginning.
The installation was activated in 1919 as headquarters of the Group Independent Aviation of Bombardment GIAB), and then also installed the OGMA (then General Workshops for Aeronautical Material) and the Society of Aerosteiros.
Gradually the military airfield was no longer having an operational part, to become an airfield logistics support to various organizations in aeronautical installed Alverca.
According to the organization of the Air Force established in the 1950s, the airfield was meant to be the Air Base No. 8, which, however, was never activated, remaining ever as logistics airfield.
The airfield Complex Military Alverca is also characterized by having worked there the first international airport Portuguese. The airport, whose official title was an aerodrome intended to serve as a terminal for international air links with Lisbon being deactivated in 1940 when it opened the Lisbon Airport.
