This, like a number of the pubs in Stevenage, either names, or takes its name from the area that it stands in.

This pub is in the St Nicholas area of the town located in the neighbourhood centre. The area gets its name from being in the parish of St Nicholas.

St Nicholas was a Turkish saint and has of course become personified as Santa Claus in recent years. There were a number of ledgends connected to him from reurecting three dead children through multiplying a poor wheat harvest to providing a dowry for the daughters of poor men.
