José Rodrigues Maio, more commonly known as Cego do Maio (October 8, 1817 - November 13, 1884) was a Portuguese hero, life-guard and fisherman from Póvoa de Varzim in the 19th century.

He gained the highest award of the State, the Necklace of Knight of the Order of Saint James of the Tower and Sword and the Gold medal of the Royal Humanitarian Society of Porto, placed personally by King Louis I for the lives that he saved in the sea of Póvoa de Varzim.
