Construction of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis began with ground breaking May 1, 1907 and continued for more than 80 years when the last of the mosaic was in place. The cathedral is Romanesque in style on the exterior and Byzantine on the interior. The exterior of the dome is of green tile and is visible for a great distance from the Cathedral's Central West End location.
On the interior their are two central domes and multiple lesser domes and half domes. The domes are part of one of the world's larges mosaic collections. The mosaic artwork was created by 20 different artists, and covers 83,000 square feet. Installation of the 41.5 million pieces of mosaic glass began in 1912 and was completed in 1988.
