The website at (
visit link) tells us:
"The American Molder was donated to the city by Collins Carter, the president of Albion Malleable Iron Company, in 1972. The piece was
designer by sculptor Ed Chesney, and was casted by Fred Petrucci.
The face of the American Molder was deliberately made to appear
non-racial, in order to honor hard working people of all races that
Michigan Ave./ Superior St. were employed by the iron companies. At
the base of the statue, a plaque contains a quote from James Russell Lowell."
The Plaque reads:
The American Molder
Dedicated November 9, 1974
Albion Michigan
A tribute to the craftsmen and laborers of this community.
A gift of Collins L. & Mary Carter
No man is born into the world whose work is not born with him. There is always work, and tools to work with, for those who will, and blessed are the thorny hands of toil.
-- James Russell Lowell
