Delius always had an interest in the cycles of life and regeneration especially in nature. When Bradford were developing a new public square called Exchange Square they had a national competition for a sculpture to form the focal point.
Amber Hiscott won the competition and in 1993 the sculpture ‘Homage to Delius’ was unveiled. It is made up of two 20 foot long decaying leaves forming a tunnel, which viewers are encouraged to walk through.
The skeletal form represents decay, but part of the leaves have stained glass in them representing the regeneration of life in the forest.
In front of the sculpture is a small plaque on the steps with the following quote about life and regeneration.
The woods and forests are full of silence
Ripeness bids death come
Eterrnal Renewing
Everything on earth will return again,
Ever return again.

The quote is made up of parts of Delius’ Requiem ‘To the memory of all young artists fallen in the war’
