This site is English Heritage’s most modern building and provides a fascinating insight into cold war thinking.
The bunker was manned by the Royal Observer Corps and its role was to monitor any fallout in the event of a nuclear attack. They would also have detected the location of the bombs and their strength.
This monitoring post was one of a number throughout the country. They operated between the 1960s and the 1990s.
