The Newfound Gap Trailhead provides an easy jumping off point for anyone wanting to hike north or south along the GSMNP portion of the Appalachian Trail. The Trail crosses U.S. Highway 441 at Newfound Gap. From here, one can hike south (and up) towards the highest mountain on the AT, Clingmans Dome, or hike north (and up)to Mt. Lecont. Parking, as well as restroom facilities, is available at the Gap.
The AT, one of the longest continuous footpaths in the world, winds more than 2170 miles through 14 states. Here the trail follows some of the highest ridges and some of the most spectacular views in the Appalachians, paralelling the Tennessee-North Carolina Border for 70 miles. During the 1930s, hundreds of Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) workers cut rock, felled trees, and built shelters - shaping the narrow ribbon of a path, from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin, Maine.
