Seine Majestät Kaiser Franz Joseph wanderte 1856 zu jener Stelle, die seither „Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe“ heißt. Hier angekommen, stehen Sie in einer Höhe von 2.369 m direkt vor Österreichs höchstem Berg, dem Großglockner (3.798 m), mit Blick auf den längsten Gletscher der Ostalpen, die Pasterze. Murmeltiere tummeln sich in unmittelbarer Nähe und mit etwas Glück sehen Sie auch die mächtigen Steinböcke.
Der dort gelegene Nationalpark-Platz mit dem Kunstwerk „Wellenberg samt Bronzeboot“ dient als einzigartiger Aussichts- und Erholungsort!
Im Besucherzentrum lässt sich auf vier Etagen viel Interessantes rund um das Thema „Großglockner“ in Erfahrung bringen – zu besichtigen gibt es unter anderem:
die Ausstellung „Faszination Eis & Gletscher“
das Glockner-Kino mit Kurzfilm „Großglockner Impressionen“ von Georg Riha und ein interaktives Glockner-Panorama
den Kraftraum „Der Großglockner als Kraftberg“
sowie diverse Sonderausstellungen
Ein Infopoint und das Nationalpark-Infocenter befinden sich im Erdgeschoß. Neben einer Breitbildmultivision wird Wissenswertes über die Nationalparkregion Kärnten, Salzburg und Tirol vermittelt.
