There are no rivers in the Yucatan Peninsula. Due to the limestone in the area, drainage is mostly subterranean although caves and springs called "cenotes" are common. The area around Xel-ha lagoon contains several of these cenotes, and the lagoon itself is in part a large cenote. There is also an underwater cave here. The name Xel-ha was given by the Mayan people: Xel for source, ha for water.
