Duke Memorial Methodist Church began in 1885 as a Sunday school class in the Duke tobacco factory. In 1886 a church building was constructed at the corner of Main and Gregson Streets and the congregation adopted the name Main Street Methodist Episcopal Church.
In 1907, construction began on a new sanctuary at the corner of West Chapel Hill and Duke Streets. The first service was held in 1912. The new house of worship was called Memorial Methodist Church and was renamed Duke Memorial Methodist Church in 1925 in honor of Washington Duke, an early patron of the church.
The present day photo was taken cattycorner from the church in front of the North Carolina Mutual Life Building.
