This modern pub may have a carefully chosen name. But may have been the result of a mix up.

This pub looks as though it was probably built in the 1950s or 60s. The Wyvern is a legendary beast, being a winged dragon with the feet of an eagle and a barded serpent tail. It is featured in many coats of arms including that of the Duke of Rutland. However, it is doubtful that this has anything to do with this pub.

The Wyvern is located close to what was at one time one of the UK's largest car manufacturing factories. However, the symbol of Vauxhall Motors was not a Wyvern, but a Gryphon, featuring in the arms of Faulkes de Breaute, a mercenary soldier who was granted the manor of Luton for services to King John as long ago as the 13th century.

So 'The Wyvern'? From 1948 to 1957 Vauxhall produced a car called The Wyvern. There is a train of thought that it may have been called The Wyvern simply because the Vauxhall badge was misidentified by Vauxhall themselves!
