Born in Wisconsin, Marston came to San Diego in 1870. He eventually became a department store owner. He was a primary philanthopist in the City and developed an interest in seeing the City have a great civic park like those in other big cities. He hired architect John Nolen to develop plans in 1908 and in 1926. The sculpture here depicts Marston sitting on a short wall, overlooking the Park and perusing blue prints. Next to him on the wall, sits his hat.
