Jonathan Bassett was born in Sandwich, Massachusetts on May 24, 1764. He was the son of Nathaniel and Hannah (Hall) Bassett. He died July 4, 1833 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Jonathan fought in the Revolutionary War when he was 17 and served in Colonel Freeman's regiment from Massachusetts as a private near the end of the war. It thought that he was wounded and moved to the Hot Springs area in 1828 to be receive treatment for conditions caused by his wounds. It is thought that he died from malaria.
