This part of England was home to over 70 airfields during WWII. In 1942 they were being built at a rate of one every three days! The Quonset hut, and the British Nissen hut, were important structures at those facilities and many still dot the countryside.
This building's metal structure was used as the a ward in the USAAF hospital at Wymondam, Norfolk, where the 77th and the 231st Station Hospitals were based. The wood interior came from a hut that was in use at Stanstead Airport until 1998, but was initially used by units of the 9th USAAF, primarily the 344th Bomb Group. It now houses the Bomber Command Museum of The Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum. Ironically the facility also has a British Nissen Hut which houses the 446th Bomb Group, USAAF, Museum. You'd think they would switch them around....
