Completed in the summer holidays of 2010 the designs and negotiations with the local residents led up to the mural creation. The artwork is produced using spray-paint and took 2 days and nights to apply to this underpass' walls.

The students describe the design in their own words on the following website: visit link

'“From one end of the underpass you will see a face blowing onto a dandelion and the seeds being blown the full length of the wall. The seeds represent young people growing up and leaving or staying. The changing light as the sun rises and sets and the change in weather reflects on the wall, so that it is always giving a new perspective.”

“The community wanted flowers to form the basis of the wall and we used Monet's influence of green and brown colours, following the design through from the wall to the banks of the underpass.”

“After college and university we both want to work with clients and this has been a fantastic experience for us, listening to the community and coming up with a design and making it work. It was quite an achievement to persuade people that less is more!” '

This article in the Bedfordshire on Sunday newspaper online shows a picture of the underpass before the mural and describes the importance of the venture:visit link

'Bedford Borough Council’s Community Safety Team, Integrated Youth Support and The Youth Offending Team have been working on a Mural Art Project, which is set to be completed on Friday, August 27 (2010).

Cllr Barry Huckle has been actively supporting the project which received £1,290 from the Street Cred Funding stream.

So far, Bedford Borough Council have held two consultation meetings with young people from Bedford Day Care Centre and members of the local community about possible ideas for the mural planned for the underpass between the Wixams and Wilstead. Students from Bedford College then took these ideas and have produced a design.

Cllr Huckle, portfolio holder for arts and leisure, said: "This project just goes to show when young people are engaged in positive activities, they can make a real difference to both improving their lives and their community at the same time."

One side of the tunnel will be cleaned up over the next two weeks, and then between 16 and 27 August, Bedford Borough Council will run the project which will involve young people, students from Bedford College, members from the Bedford Day Care Centre and members of the local community, painting the mural.'
