The building was converted to become the City Art Gallery in 1892.
It holds collections of both paintings and ceramics and the works span from the 14th Century to the 20th Century.
Although the front of the building still has the words City Art Gallery on it, the name has changed to York Art Gallery.
There is a statue of local artist William Etty outside the gallery which was erected in 1911. Inside the gallery they have the largest collection of this artist, who was the first major British artist to specialise in the nude before the 20th Century.
