The 1946 accident resulted in 2 deaths. However, this plaque remembers the 7 people killed in the May 2002 accident.
A train travelling north from Kings Cross Station crossed points at just under 100 m.p.h. Most of the carriages crossed safely but it is thought that the points moved as the rear carriage passed over, resulting in a high speed derailment, and the carriage mounting the platform. Six people were killed whilst travelling in that carriage. A seventh person was killed by masonry falling into the street below.
