The station was opened on 23 December 1863. In 1971, the original air terminal was replaced by a in a modern way looking construction with much glass of the hand of architect Cees duma. There are plans the total station area revitalise with new houses, office buildings and new a bus/train station (incl. air terminal). The island platform with the original overkapping can be reached by means of a level crossing to the station hall, to be lain at west of the tracks, and a pedestrian tunnel with terminations to both ends. The island platform lies between the tracks 2 and 3.
