Great Allegheny Passage - Rockwood Trailhead - Rockwood, Pennsylvania
Rockwood, at mile 44 of the Great Allegheny Passage, is the closest access area to the Pennsylvania Turnpike (15 Miles). The trail was constructed in 1994 and was then named the Allegheny Highlands Trail, In 2001, with the continuous completion of the trail, the name was unified as the Great Allegheny Passage.
From here, four hundred yards southeast, there is a commercially-operated primitive campsite (Husky Haven Campground), with their offices and showers across the river in town.
Meanwhile at the trailhead, there is a chemical toilet, water fountain, and a information station that used to be staffed by a "trail ambassador" for several years until his passing in 2010. There is a mural of him as you cross the river into town proper.
Trail maintenance is conducted by the Somerset County Rail-To Trail Corportation.
