George Brown was a Father of Confederation and a catalyst in forming the coalition government that founded Canada in 1867. His Second Empire home, built 1874-1877, is one of Toronto's most stately residences befitting this nation builder.

An admirable venue for intimate, upscale conferences in Toronto is George Brown House, known to its original owner as Lambton Lodge. George Brown was the remarkable founder of The Globe newspaper, a statesman and a prominent Father of Confederation. This neighbourhood would have been highly sought after 1874-1877 when his residence was built. Brown became a senator and was retired from seeking election to Parliament when he commissioned his red brick residence whose construction he supervised. It is a clear example of the Second Empire style and is said to take after the former Government House in Toronto. It has warm furnishings and features reception rooms with carved walnut door frames, fine plasterwork and appealing marble mantelpieces. At one time Duncan Coulson, President of the Bank of Toronto, succeeded Brown as occupant. The house was restored by the Ontario Heritage Foundation and the Canadian Parks Service in the late 1980s. George Brown House was designated of national importance in 1976 and a plaque to Brown himself was erected on its grounds by the federal government in 1989 and then a replacement installed in 2011. No federal plaque has as yet been erected for the house.
