The pleasure of waymarking in your hometown is to rediscover a piece of your history and share it with your friends. I grew up here at this skating center. I learned about disco, Donna Summer, Manfred Mann, the Beatles, and everything else that was 70s here. Remember Disco Duck? Birthday parties had to be here; of course mine was as well. Crushes lived and died here. Parents would drop you off with 5 bucks which was enough for admission, skate rentals, pizza, soda and a few games of pinball.
I returned here for the first time in almost 30 years. I remembered the layout, which is the same, but lots have changed. Kids have inline skates now. They have an arcade here spread out all over the place including skee ball, driver games, basketball games, a dancing game as well as other unusual attractions but no pinball machines.
They were still hosting birthday parties as several were scheduled while I visited with my children, who incidentally, had a blast. I was tempted to skate but realized I'd better not so I could keep a better eye on my children. The snack bar has also been updated. When the games are played, tickets are given out, and then after you have accumulated enough tickets, you go to machine that sucks them up and counts them and issues a ticket. Next, go to a counter and trade the ticket for some cheap cr@p only a kid could love.
I also noticed the same wooden floor is being used. My kids have never been to a real skating rink so they found it very difficult in the beginning as they were slipping all over the place. Everything else is still the same with the same lame games I used to love. Admission was only $5 with a $2 rental per skate. I had a coupon for buy one get one so only paid $11 for the three of us. What a deal!
