John Bunyan (1628 - 1688) was a Baptist preacher and the writer of 'Pilgrim's Progress'. He was born in Elstow near Bedford, and preached within a few hundred feet of this pub.

He served in the Parliamentary army during the civil war, but in the main plied his trade as a tinker and preacher. The Restoration was bad news for Bunyan and he continued to preach as a Baptist when the diktat was that people should attend Anglican church. He was imprisoned for his religious beliefs on more than one occasion.

The sign features all that remains of a cottage where Bunyan preached. The chimney still stands nearby and is easily recognisable.
