Memorial Park was established in 1908, one year after Oklahoma's Statehood. To the north of the park building that now houses the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, is a plaza area dedicated to William Shakespeare.
It consists of a garden and shrub area with walks. A curved, native sandstone wall six feet tall, partially encircles the plaza. At the center of the wall is a stepped arch, with a recessed arched cubbyhole containing a bronze bust of Shakespeare. Beneath the bust is a plaque reading: "In honor of Shakespeare / Presented by the Shakespeare Club of Oklahoma City / 1933."
To either side of this center arch, mounted on the stone wall, are quotations from two of Shakespeare's plays.
On the south: "Tongues in trees, books in the running brook, sermons in stones, and good in everything. As You Like It, Act 2, Scene 1."
To the north: "This above all, to thine ownself be true; and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man. Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3."
