?In 1625 the archbishop Afonso Furtado de Mendonca blessed the ground where the temple would be deployed, and then they started immediately to work.
The masonry was completed only in 1653, except for the towers, which were completed in 1694.
Despite the slow pace of work, the structure of the temple soon began to show signs of disrepair. So on 16 November 1731 the table of brotherhood called the master Manuel Fernandes da Silva, then occupied the director of the works of Mafra, to repair the ravages of time. This after demolishing part of the walls, abandoned the work.
Only in 1734, was demolished the body of the church, leaving only the facade, having been the work complete in 1739.
They were architects of the Church, the Rev. Geraldo Alvarez architect, the master builder Francis Vaz, the licensee and the Reverend John Dias Leite Andrade Pedro de Coimbra.
