"The Confederate Monument [which sits] in front of the Chatham County Courthouse was dedicated on August 23, 1907 in a ceremony attended by about 4,000. Mrs. Henry A. London, president of the Winnie Davis Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, was especially honored because she labored for three and a half years, writing 1600 letters, to obtain the statue."

From Chatham County, 1771-1971, by Wade H. Hadley, Doris G. Horton, and Nell C. Strowd, published 1971

The front of the monument reads: "To the Confederate Soldiers of Chatham County" and at the base: "Our Confederate Heroes." See below for photos of the the rear and side inscriptions. Chatham County sent 1900 boys and men to fight for the Confederacy. Of these, 1450 enlisted and served in Chatham County Companies. The remaining 450 served with companies of other counties.

Old-timers in Pittsboro say that as children, they tossed bottle caps from the balcony of the courthouse, competing to get the caps to stay in the brim of the soldier's hat.

This monument is the subject of some controversy right now in Pittsboro and Chatham County. There are some who want the monument moved away from the courthouse (or removed altogether) since they say it represents the racist, slave-holding South and another group who wants the monument left in place as a reminder of history. Stay tuned.

To record your own visit to this waymark, post your own photo of the memorial along with some comments. Logs must have at least one photo or will be removed. Thanks.
