The memorial is in the form of a flat floored wagon with large sections of coal retained by brass fittings. It is situated adjacent to the
Wombwell Hillies Golf Course Club House and overlooks the site of the former colliery,which is now the golf course. It is the work of Wombwell Heritage Group
to mark the 150 aniversary of the disaster.
The dedication on the metal plate attached to the memorial reads-
THIS MEMORIAL COMMEMORATES THE
LUNDHILL COLLIERY DISASTER OF
FEBRUARY 19th 1857
189 MEN AND BOYS LOST THEIR LIVES
WHEN FIRE ENGULFED THE MINE
18 SURVIVED AND 4 BODIES
WERE NEVER FOUND
THIS SITE OVERLOOKS
THE FORMER COLLIERY
