Ye Olde Fighting Cocks dates back to the 16th century and indeed, the shape of the main part of the building appears to take on the shape of a cock fighting pit. However, it is likely that this is because it was originally a pigeon house. It is thought that cock fighting took place in the bar area.
Cromwell banned cock fighting in 1653 (long live the republic) and is indeed said to have stayed here for a night during the revolution and stabled his horse in what now makes up the bar area of the pub.
Although its claim is contested by others, the Guinness Book of Records, recognises this as the oldest pub in the UK.
