The construction of the Castle of Lamego, as we know it today, happens in the second half of the 12th century, while the city walls stands already in the 13h century. Over the years, the castle lost its defensive function for which it was built, changing from military fortification to prison, in the 16th century, and after that to County jail. Currently there is only the tower, restored by the group of Scouts of Lamego. This monument is so important in history as a witness to the founding of the city and a landmark in the formation of Portugal.
