The sculpture of Dewey the library cat sits proudly on the checkout desk of the Spencer Public Library. Behind him postcards, posters, and book bags are for sale to commemorate the feline resident who used to attract so much attention with area readers.
Dewey Readmore Books was no ordinary cat. He was only 8 weeks old on that cold January morning in 1988 when the librarians at Spencer Public Library found the shivering kitten in the book drop box. It didn’t take long to make his way into the hearts of the staff who decided to adopt him as a permanent resident of the library.
As an official member of the staff Dewey’s nationwide popularity increased as his job description included library publicity. He appeared in newspapers, magazines, and on TV; he even starred in the video “Puss in Books.”
Dewey had just celebrated his 19th birthday when he died in 2006. He is still greatly missed and lives on through the books that library director Vicki Myron has written about his days at the library.
