There aren’t many places left where you can sit on a bar stool and order an ice cream soda, sundae, or phosphate, but the town of Elk Point is lucky to have such an establishment.

When a highway billboard advertises an old fashioned soda fountain, it’s just natural that the traveler would pull off at the appropriate exit. There aren’t many places left where you can sit on a bar stool and order an ice cream soda, sundae, or phosphate, but the town of Elk Point is lucky to have such an establishment.

Edgar’s Old Fashioned Soda Fountain was named after Edgar Schmiedt, grandfather of one of the present owners of the ice cream parlor. Pharmacies and soda fountains went hand-in-hand so it was natural to expand Elk Point’s Pioneer Drug to include Edgar’s.

The front door opens into a world nearly forgotten where wrought iron ice cream tables and chairs provide seating under a painted pressed tin ceiling. Behind the Italian marble counter a full width mirror reflects stacks of soda glasses, and to the side, a candy counter offers a colorful array of sweets. A brick arch doorway in the back of the room leads to added space for gift merchandise.

Choose from a traditional dish of hand dipped ice cream or ignore the calories with a “Daring Delight” or something from the “Dieter’s Danger Zone.” Anything you choose will take you back through the years on a nostalgic trip to an old fashioned ice cream parlor.

The soda fountain is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, but closed on Sunday.
