This was one of the earliest colleges in the state of Minnesota. Construction began in 1858 and was completed by 1860. The school had over 300 students but that number was greatly diminished as many left to fight in the Civil War. The evergreen trees that remain today were planted in memory of those students who did not return.
In 1905 the school was gutted by fire and has remained vacant ever since.
