The Mall of Asia, reported by most sources as the third largest in Asia, officially opened on May 20, 2006, inaugurated by Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. It is the ambitious project of Henry Sy and his SM Holdings Group which operates over 40 modern malls in the Philippines.
The mall is much more than just a shopping center, but also an entertainment complex with its ice rink, IMAX theater, 31-lane bowling center, arcades, carousels, and open spaces for children's activities, concerts, and, of course, the Pyrotechic Olympics out on the Esplanade.
Acknowledged as the Mall of Asia's symbol, this globe is placed in a traffic roundabout at the entrance to the mall.
On November 18, 2009, the globe was fitted with 26,300 LED lights enabling spectacular light displays, simulating a rotating globe, flags, Christmas lights, and other thematic displays.
