This sign is a fairly modern, and tasteful style. One of my personal favourites.

?It is not entirely clear why blackbirds are the subject of this sign. However, it is certain that the colour black appears in many signs. Bears, horses, swans and many other things are shown in black form. One rather attractive theory is that as a result of the 1736 Gin Act (abolished in 1742), many public house owners were bound to drape their signs in black velvet, eventually adding the word black to the already established name.
