This local habitat is specially preserved by the Trust Committee who purchased the land in 1999 with money from St Neots Town Council with a grant given by the Countryside Commission. Landscape 2000, a local environmental group helped enormously in the acquisition of the land.
These details can be found on the website below which also gives this explanation:
'The Pightle Millennium Green Trust was set up and is a registered charity – no. 1070648. The object of the Trust is To provide and maintain an open space to be known as ‘The Pightle Millennium Green’ for the benefit of the Inhabitants and to be used forever as an area for informal recreation play or other leisure-time occupations, a meeting area or place for community events and for any other lawful purpose consistent with these trusts and for the general benefit of the community.'
Previous uses of the Pightle were grazing, gravel pits (used to build the airfields in WWII), a coal ash deposit site from Little Barford Power Station, a dumping ground for Sunny Smile who made baby toys for Woolworths, a horses' paddock for Mr Carrington and finally scrubland until it was preserved today by the trustees.
The site is also part of an ongoing conservation effort to save and preserve the endangered Black Poplar tree.
