This monument to the Oaks Colliery Disaster is situated in the grounds of Christ Church, Ardsley, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Thirty five of the killed are buried there. A further monument to this disaster, of a later date 1913,is situated on Doncaster Road, Barnsley. This is posted as waymark

Oaks Colliery explosions on the 12th and 13th of December 1866 claimed 354 lives.
The dedication panel on this monument reads-
ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION TO COMMEMORATE THE DEATHS OF 354 MEN AND BOYS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE EXPLOSION AT THE OAKS COLLIERY
There is an inscription on each of the other three panels on the memorial -
"IT IS A FEARFUL THING TO FALL INTO THE HANDS OF THE LIVING GOD"
"WATCH THEREFORE FOR YE KNOW NEITHER THE DAY NOR THE HOUR WHEREIN
THE SON OF MAN COMETH"
"BOAST NOT THYSELF OF TO MORROW FOR THOU KNOWEST NOT WHAT DAY MAY BRING FORTH"
Parking was found to be easiest across the main road from the church on Cumberland Road. Care being taken when crossing the busy road.
