Spirit Lake has had a fish hatchery since 1880. A building was constructed in 1915 and that was enlarged twelve years later. The present building was constructed in 1963. It is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays; during the time of walleye spawning, it is open 24/7.
Managed by the Department of Natural Resources this facility is a major tourist attraction in the area. The only source of Iowa’s muskellunge, the hatchery also collects, spawns, incubates and raise between 60-70 million walleyes for stocking lakes throughout the state.
