The cabin was built in 1936 for Froelich G. Rainey who had become the became the first professor of anthropology at the University of Alaska in 1935. The three room cabin served as home for Professor Rainey and his wife until 1942 when he left the University. The University purchased the cabin at that time to use as faculty housing.

In the late 1940's the cabin became home to Ivar Skarland, who earlier was a student of Rainey and later became the head of the anthropology department. He lived in the cabin until his sudden death in 1965. The cabin became the informal meeting place for the department and for informal campus picnics during the Skarland years.

The cabin now serves as housing for the permanent or visiting anthropology faculty member or student.
