The monument is in the Grounds of All Saints Church, Darfield. Ten men were killed in an accident on 30th December 1886, when being dashed to the the bottom whilst ascending in the cage. The engineman was tried for manslaughter and acquited.
A panel reads -
THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBERANCE
BY THE WORKMEN AND FRIENDS OF THE TEN MEN WHO LOST THEIR
LIVES AT HOUGHTON MAIN COLLIERY ON DECEMBER 30th 1866.
On the base is inscribed-
IN THE MIDST OF LIFE WE ARE IN DEATH
The church is situated at the end of Church Street and there is plenty of parking space in this area.
