New town hall is simple, Neo-Renaissance building on the main town sqare, decorated with statues of two sphinx atop the shield.
The beginnings of the city date back to the early days of Czech ruling dukes family of Premysl. According to legend, Saint Adalbert built the fortified church (castellum, kostelec in the Czech language), protecting people in times of danger. This place was on important route from Prague to city and castle of Kourim. The first historically documented date is 1344, in which King John of Luxemburg exchanged Kostelec Castle and village for castle and town Nachod. In 1489 the village became a town and got right to hold markets and crafts operation. In 1920 received present name, which means “fortified church above the black forest”.
