Sandy Hook, just north of Highlands, New Jersey, is a pristine barrier peninsula, rich in nature and history. Henry Hudson discovered the peninsula in the early 1600’s and became a protected anchor spot for ships traveling to New York Harbor. After the Battle of Monmouth, in 1778, Washington pushed to British to retreat. It took the British Army 7 days to travel from Freehold to Sandy Hook, to board the ships back home.

Between 1874 and 1919, Sandy Hook was home to Fort Hancock, a coastal artillary base that protected New York Harbor. Much of the fort remains for the history loving visitors.

History lovers will also enjoy the displays of missiles as you enter the reserve...it was once the site of a Nike missle base.

Nature lovers will enjoy the numerous paths through beach areas and a bird snactuary. Fishing, hiking, biking, bird-watching, photography, picnicking, swimming and more are available to visitors.

This is a Federal Reserve. Fee for access Memorial Day through Labor Day. This sandy area tends to be very dry. Smokey is a great reminder of how quickly and easily this pristine area can be ruined by careless visitors.
