When in 1915 the Milwaukee Road embarked on a project to elevate the railroad tracks, they needed to accommodate the railroad station. So the station building, along with the ticket counter and waiting room, was located under the tracks next to the bridge over National Avenue, and patrons used stairs to access the station platforms above the station.
The station stopped serving passengers prior to World War II, and eventually the building became the home of the Model Railroad Club of Milwaukee. This is the oldest railroad club in the USA to be located in one place. The Club was started in February 1933 by various individuals including W. K. Walthers (famous for railroad modeling supplies), Albert C. Kalmbach (famous for his railroad modeling publishing business) and his lifelong friend Frank Zeidler (America's last Socialist mayor (1948-1960) of Milwaukee). Kalmbach, Walthers and Zeidler teamed up again in 1935, launching the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA).
