Each statue is 7 feet high and carved from a single piece of local stone by Farmers and Brindley, craftsmen sculptors of London. The statues are high up along the front of the city hall.

Henry had become heir apparent to the English throne after the signing of the Treaty of Wallingford with King Stephen in 1153. This had settled the dispute between Stephen and Henry’s mother Matilda.
Stephen died in 1154 and Henry was crowned on the 19th December 1154 in Westminster Abbey. His arrival on the throne put an end to the period of English history known as the Anarchy, and led to a relatively more stable rule.

Through marriage he also had various titles in Normandy and France.

Stephen had eight children, and had divided some of his French lands amongst them. They became ambitious for more power and some of his sons started plotting against him, but at first were not serious rivals. However by 1189 Richard had joined forces with Henry’s main rival Philip Augustus. They defeated Henry in France and he lost a lot of his French lands. Henry died in France on 6th July 1189 at Chinon in central France.

During his reign he introduced legal reforms that would eventually lead to trial by jury.
