"The vaccinations started to be administered promptly at 8 am. Drive-through vaccinations began at 9 am, and a line of cars wrapped around Qualcomm Stadium, where the shots were being given. Every person who wanted to receive a shot completed a questionnaire and were pre-screened by medical personnel. Once deemed a good candidate for the vaccination, Kaiser Permanente doctors and registered nurses injected the vaccine and signed and collected the patient's registration form. Completed forms were tallied up during the course of the day.
The previous record to beat was 3,271 flu shots, set in Florida in 2006. In order to break the record, an average of 409 shots had to be administered per hour. Although the doctors and nurses were working efficiently, quality and safety were the number one priorities. The Department of Health was on site to certify that all health regulations were followed.
By 4 pm, a total of 6,215 vaccinations were administered - a new Guinness World Records achievement! Everyone involved (the majority of whom were volunteers) did a fantastic job not only in setting a new world record, but also in helping to keep San Diego healthy. On behalf of Guinness World Records, congratulations!"
