You can almost picture the small-town, Norman Rockwell-type picture of this station serving the locals back in 1935.

Carney is a town of about 650 people in Lincoln County. On the northeast side of town is a small area on S. Main Street with several abandoned commercial buildings. The town apparently has moved to its south side.

This is a rock building, with raised tubular mortar, and the date 1935 above the door, in small pebbles. The two front display windows were filled with concrete block many years ago, and the smaller windows which remained have also been boarded up, as well as the door.

On the south side of the building is an overhead door, and a vacuum pump machine. The pumps have been removed, but the area where they stood is still visible in front of the building.

I had the privilege of speaking with the owner's son who told me that his father, Claude Fisher, built this station out of rocks that came from his father's farm a few miles away. He hauled the rocks to town with a horse and wagon and built this building. He was an excellent welder and repairman, and repaired the town folks' vehicles back when you just kept fixing them up, as getting a new car wasn't an option. This was a Texaco filling station and his son remembers that gas was eight cents a gallon for regular and eleven cents for ethyl. They moved from Carney back in 1942, and the building has been used for other purposes over the years.
