This tree was moved from the entrance of the San Diego Zoo to the Monkey Trails area to provide a canopy. It is the largest Strangler Fig in the United States.

This ficus tree is 214 feet tall...and was computed to weigh 220 tons - the equivalent of 35 elephants. The trunk of the tree has divided into about 3 major sections...the girth of the largest being approximately 8 feet.
The sign near the tree doesn't indicate when the tree was moved...but, it would appear that the Monkey Trails area is a relatively new part of the Zoo. It took 4 weeks to move the tree...going just 91 inches a day. This website verifies the information above: (
