Located on the Eagle Trail at the San Diego Zoo, this is one of two sand-sculpted hippos by artists Thomas King. This sculpture depicts a huge standing hippo wearing a floral swimsuit.
The second sculpture is just around the corner from this one. Each of the sculptures is somewhat obstructed by greenery and has a plaque which reads:
"FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES
TO ENJOY EVERY DAY
AND TO THE ZOO'S 80TH YEAR,
HIP HIPPO-RAY!
CHUCK AND PILAR BAHDE
OCTOBER, 1996"
