Located on the Eagle Trail at the San Diego Zoo, this is one of two sand-sculpted hippos by artists Thomas King. This sculpture depicts a huge hippo with diving fins on his feet and a weight belt around his waist. In the center of his chest is an apparent medallion which reads "Hippo Divers San Diego Zoo". The second sculpture is just around the corner from this one. Each of the sculptures is somewhat obstructed by greenery and has a plaque which reads:
"FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES
TO ENJOY EVERY DAY
AND TO THE ZOO'S 80TH YEAR,
HIP HIPPO-RAY!
CHUCK AND PILAR BAHDE
OCTOBER, 1996"
